The Toronto Blue Jays have been without Max Scherzer since the beginning of the season and it looks like his recovery has taken another step backwards.

Scherzer was slowly getting back to normal as he was pitching live batting practice and seem to be on the road back but then had a major setback as he felt tightness in his back which is an injury going back to 2019.

Blue Jays announce terrible Max Scherzer update regarding his recovery

The Blue Jays currently have quite a few players injured but none more than has more pressure to return than Scherzer since he signed a $15.5 million contract this off-season and has only pitched in one game so far.
According to MLB insider Keegan Matheson, it looks like Scherzer has yet to start ramping up his recovery again as he has been playing catch but needs to get back to live batting practice.
Scherzer is still playing catch, so he needs to get back up to facing live hitters again," -Matheson

Most believe that Scherzer will probably not be back for at least a few more weeks due to this setback which is a tough spot to be in for the Blue Jays since their starting rotation really has been struggling.
The fact that Scherzer is still not facing live hitters means that he'll likely be out at least a few more weeks, which isn't ideal for a team that ranks 23rd in baseball with a collective 4.40 ERA. -Valdez

Trading Scherzer at the deadline if he is healthy by then might be the only move that makes sense for Toronto since they could at leas get some kind of use out of having brought him in this off-season because paying $15.5 million to get a few innings out of him does not make sense.
The worrying part with Scherzer is his age which makes his recovery process take a lot longer than if he was in his 20's or early 30's but then again the Blue Jays would not have signed him for that little if he was still that young.
