Toronto Blue Jays star shortstop Bo Bichette is hitting the free agent market after this season, if he does not sign an extension with the Blue Jays, he could be expected to change positions on a new team.
"«It depends, in large part, on what Bo really feels in his heart about, I think, to some degree about playing shortstop,» Olney said in a radio appearance on TSN 1050 this week."-Olney
«I know when I talk to evaluators with other teams, they feel like he's going to need to move [to a new position]. That he's going to need to be a second baseman, maybe a third baseman, but go someplace else I'm assuming he's going to want to stay at shortstop if he stays with the Blue Jays.»
While they are still both young, they are most likely expected to play in the majors in the next few years.
If Bichette signs a lengthy extension he should look to get used to a new position sooner rather than later.
It is not always easy to switch positions and it's hard discussion for management to have with a player. Especially a position as important as shortstop, arguably the most important position in the infield.
If Bichette does want to get maximum value for his contract however, he'll need to show he can play more than just one position. This allows whichever team that has him maximize his offensive output and slot him on the defensive side where they see fit.
