The Toronto Blue Jays completed a trade back in 2021 with the New York Mets which is proving to be a great move after their latest signing yesterday of Josh Winckowski.

The Blue Jays announced yesterday that they have decided to bring Winckowski back on a two year deal minor league deal even though he will miss a big portion of the 2026 season.

The Blue Jays take a low-risk flyer on former Red Sox right-hander Josh Winckowski as he rehabs from elbow surgery, betting on upside in 2026 and beyond.

Blue Jays win trade with the Mets

Back during the 2021 off-season, the Blue Jays completed a big trade for Steven Matz which saw Winckowski, Sean Reid-Foley and Yennsy Diaz all head to New York.

Winckowski did not last long with the Mets as they traded him less than a month later to the Boston Red Sox.

The Blue Jays ended up getting a solid year out of Matz as he finished with a 3.82 ERA in 29 games with 150.2 innings pitched and 144 strikeouts.

Now a few years after trading Winckowski, the move looked like it was worth it as they got some solid outings from Matz and now have Winckowski back in the organization on a team friendly two year deal.

Even at the time, this trade was seen as a great move by Ross Atkins but this latest signing just makes it even more clear.

Signing Winckowski was a great low risk move since he is on a minor league deal and despite still recovering from an injury, he is coming off a decent year in Boston where he finished with a 3.86 ERA.
