Following a quiet six-game road trip, the Toronto Blue Jays broke out of their offensive slump in a big way during the second inning of Thursday's game against the Athletics.
Toronto erupted for eight runs in the second inning, surpassing their total offensive output from the entire six-game road trip, highlighted by a towering home run from Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and a record-matching showing from Ernie Clement.
Clement ties Blue Jays record in 12-0 blowout win over the Athletics on Thursday night.
Sportsnet reported that
Clement racked up five RBI's in the second inning inning alone, launching a three-run homer off A's starter Jacob Lopez before adding a two-run double off reliever Anthony Maldonado.
"The feat tied a Blue Jays franchise record, matching only the five runs driven in by Edwin Encarnacion in the seventh inning against the Houston Astros on July 13, 2013." -Sportsnet
In addition to the big swings from Clement and Guerrero Jr., four other Blue Jays notched hits in the explosive second inning, while Anthony Santander reached base twice on walks, capping off Toronto's most dominant single-inning display of the season.
"The Blue Jays' previous season-high for runs in an inning came last Wednesday in their 14-0 win over the San Diego Padres, when they pushed seven runs across the plate in the eighth inning." -Sportsnet
With Toronto's offense fluctuating throughout the season, Thursday marked only the sixth time the team has scored eight or more runs in a game, having done so just five times prior.
