Max Scherzer made meaningful progress in his recovery from a right thumb injury on Wednesday.

Scherzer started throwing to live batters for the first time since being placed on the injured list in March, a step the Toronto Blue Jays hope signals his return is getting closer.

Scherzer makes significant progress since going on IL.

Scherzer, a three-time Cy Young Award winner who joined the Blue Jays on a one-year, $15.5 million contract in February, tossed 20 pitches during the session.
Sportsnet reported that according to manager John Schneider, as long as there are no setbacks, Scherzer is expected to throw again this weekend with an increased pitch count.
«It felt good. I've gotten all the inflammation out, so I can finally grip the ball again and not blow out my shoulder. But I'm not celebrating this until I'm back starting in a major league game.» -Scherzer

Scherzer has received two cortisone shots this season to reduce inflammation in his thumb. He was recently moved to the 60-day injured list, making him ineligible to return until May 29.
Max Scherzer threw a 20-pitch live BP against Nathan Lukes and Myles Straw here in Anaheim today. Session went «really well» per Jays manager John Schneider. Another similar session expected this weekend in Seattle.
Scherzer said on Tuesday that his problematic right thumb, which also impacted his 2022 and 2023 seasons, was just as big of an issue in 2024.
«This is what knocked me out in 2023, and (I had it) all of last year. It wasn't so much the back injury, it was this thumb injury giving me all the fits in the world. I thought I addressed it. I thought I had done all the grip-strength work, but I came into spring training, and it popped back out.» -Scherzer

Scherzer exited his Blue Jays debut on March 29 against the Orioles after just three innings due to soreness in his right lat. He later explained that the discomfort was linked to his ongoing thumb issue.
