Toronto Blue Jays 40 man roster talk starts with Shane Bieber, because his post Tommy John form could swing 2026.

BlueJaysNation's roster review on Wednesday said it plainly, the rotation has a question mark, and Bieber is the loudest one. Toronto paid for upside at the 2025 deadline, now it needs that bet to cash.
The Jays acquired Bieber from Cleveland on July 31, 2025, sending pitching prospect Khal Stephen the other way. A few months later, Bieber surprised everyone by opting into his $16 million player option for 2026.
That decision only makes sense if Bieber believes the ace version still exists. In 2020 he ran away with the AL Cy Young, posting a 1.63 ERA in 77.1 innings, then backed it up with a 2.88 ERA across 200 innings in 2022.

Shane Bieber shapes Toronto Blue Jays rotation

Bieber's Tommy John surgery came in April 2024, and any pitcher coming back needs more than one clean month to look normal again. The fastball command has to return first, then the slider can start stealing strikeouts.
The rough part is that Bieber is apparently still not completely healthy and could miss some time at the start of the 2026 season.
Toronto got a real glimpse late last season, even if it was still a small sample. Bieber went 4-2 with a 3.57 ERA in seven regular season starts, then logged a 3.86 ERA over five postseason appearances.
The October story was messy in the way playoff stories always are. He pitched well in spots, but he also wore the Game 7 World Series loss after allowing the go-ahead homer in the 11th inning.
Despite playing through the playoffs, it was reported earlier this off-season that Bieber was not 100% when he returned and is still rehabbing his injuries.
The «pre surgery» Bieber isn't about radar gun bravado, it's about living on the corners and forcing weak contact early in counts. If he can give the Jays 150-ish steady innings, the rotation stops feeling like a daily stress test.
He's a 30-year-old former fourth round pick, and 2026 is basically a one-year prove it stage on Toronto's dime. For the Jays, the next milestone is simple, get him to April healthy, then let the results tell the rest.
