Toronto Blue Jays Trey Yesavage closing in on a major promotion
After just five professional starts, it's a legitimate question whether Blue Jays pitching prospect Trey Yesavage has already outgrown Class A Dunedin.
Blue Jays prospect pitcher Trey Yesavage could be ready for his MLB debut.
Matt Postins from Toronto Blue Jays On Si writes that earlier this week, the Blue Jays' No. 2 prospect earned his first pro win by tossing six nearly perfect innings for Dunedin. He shut down Clearwater, allowing just four hits, no runs, and no walks, while striking out eight and lowering his ERA to 2.31.
"This start came a week after he rolled through the Tampa Tarpons, the Class A affiliate of the New York Yankees. In 4.2 innings he gave up one hit, two runs and one walk while he struck out 10. It was the second straight game in which Yesavage took a perfect game into the fifth inning and struck out 10 hitters. Five games into the season he is 1-0 with a 2.31 ERA. He has 36 strikeouts and eight walks in 23.1 innings. Batters are hitting .163 against him." -Postins
Postins also writes that it's becoming evident that
Yesavage , after three years of college experience, might be ready for a tougher test in the Blue Jays' system, potentially with a promotion to High-A Vancouver.
Toronto drafted the East Carolina standout 20th overall last July with the expectation he could eventually join their starting rotation. Despite his impressive college resume, the Blue Jays opted not to pitch him last year and began his pro career this season in Dunedin.
"He was also named a first-team all-American by six different national outlets, was named to the NCAA Tournament's Greenville regional all-tournament team and the American Athletic Conference pitcher of the year." -Postins
He's clearly outperforming rookie-level competition, and the Blue Jays might need to start handling him like a more advanced prospect.
