Jose Berrios started the season off with the Toronto Blue Jays at a very respectable level, but as of late the pitcher has had significant struggles, to the point where he has been moved to the bullpen, but this demotion might also hint at an intention to trade him away.

Jose Berrios was on a 138 game streak of starting every game he has pitched, but that will come to an end for the 31 year old.

Jose Berrios' demotion could mean a move out of the Toronto Blue Jays' clubhouse.

Jake Ferraro of Jays Journal chimed in on the current Berrios situation. Unfortunately for Berrios it was bad performances at the worst times that led to this demotion.
"In September, Berrios has particularly struggled while the Blue Jays continue chasing their first division title in a decade. In three September starts, Berrios has a 5.56 ERA in 11.1 innings pitched. In Berrios' start against the Cincinnati Reds on Sept. 2, he pitched just two innings while allowing six runs."-Ferraro

That wasn't the case at the beginning of the season, in fact Berrios was a major reason for the Blue Jays success, as he was performing well while others weren't. But now with the addition of Shane Bieber and Trey Yesavage's meteoric rise, there simply isn't any room left for a struggling pitcher as the postseason fast approaches.
"Berrios' contract could also be something the Blue Jays would like to move on from. While Berrios has three years remaining on his contract, he does have an opt-out. If Berrios doesn't opt-out after 2026, he would earn $24 million per year in 2027 and 2028. Berrios has a guaranteed $19 million for the 2026 season."-Ferraro

Not only is there no room for him in the starting rotation, but his contract is too pricey to keep. The Blue Jays also have many people they need to re-sign in free agency, and the Berrios contract can be used on other more needed pieces.
The only issue is who else is going to take on that contract for a pitcher who seemingly has zero confidence right now. A change of scenery can do Berrios some good but there has to be a team willing to take on that risk.
