The proposed deal would see Cease head to the Blue Jays in exchange for right hand pitcher
Yariel Rodriguez and and the Jays #2 prospect
Ricky Tidemann.

Risky move for Blue Jays with two controllable arms in depth chart
Barion Dionis of the Jays Journal feels that this type of deal would not make sense for Toronto as Cease would be considered a high-priced rental as he will become an free agent after the season.
For the price of two controllable arms in Rodriguez and Tiedemann, it may not exactly make sense for Toronto to acquire Cease. He would be an outstanding addition to the rotation, joining the front end, but he is just an expensive rental that will become a free agent after the season. - Barion Dionis Jays Journal
On the flip side, adding a player like Cease to the rotation would augment the Jays significantly as he was fourth in Cy Young voting last year.
His numbers certainly prove that he would be a major upgrade as he had an earned runs average of 3.47, played 189 innings and struck out 224 batters in 2024. He also held a .197 in terms of opponents batted and had a WHIP of 1.07.
It might be time for the Jays to take advantage of the Padres' dysfunction and figure out a Dylan Cease trade package.
Blue Jays management including general manager Ross Atkins and president mark Shapiro we need to weigh this potential trade intensely as Dionis points out that moving these two highly regarded prospects could really hurt their long-term plans.
Adding that level of production on the mound would change everything for Toronto, but their roster is not quite set to contend yet.
They would have to give up their number two ranked prospect and a big international signing from last offseason. Since they are not ready to contend, acquiring Cease would set them back and really hurt their long-term plans. - Barion Dionis Jays Journal
Jays Management still quiet after losing out to Sasaki
Well adding Cease to the lineup would be great up front, the Jays are still licking their wounds after being rejected by Japanese pitcher
Roki Sasaki who decided to sign with the
Los Angeles Dodgers earlier today.
The Blue Jays were considered finalists of three teams which included the San Diego Padres during the sweepstakes.
No matter the case, it appears the overall reports in the MLB seems to point out that the Blue Jays are in the mix with many players but for whatever reason cannot seem to close the deal and give the team and its fan base a true contender for years to come.
