Trey Yesavage has a trick up his sleeve to help the Toronto Blue Jays rotation
The Toronto Blue Jays are complete on the mound, Trey Yesavage's emergence added to that, he had an unforgettable debut, along with a decent showing his second time out, but one thing is for sure, the pitcher's splitter is elite.
The Blue Jays made the right decision in bringing in Yesavage as he has been great so far this year and even won minor league Player of the Year.
Trey Yesavage's elite splitter could be difference for the Toronto Blue Jays.
Kenneth Teape of Toronto Blue Jays SI took a deeper dive into Trey Yesavage's two performances with the Toronto Blue Jays, and what he could offer the team heading into the playoffs.
"He dominated the Rays, throwing five innings and allowing one run on three hits and two walks. It was a historic outing, striking out nine, the most in a debut in Toronto franchise history. Alas, he learned how quickly life can be as a Big Leaguer in his next start."-Teape
His second outing wasn't as successful, surrendering four earned runs and 5 hits and only struck out two batters.
However, for someone who has moved up four levels in one season, it's not the end of the world that he struggled for one game so far in the MLB. The biggest takeaway from his first two starts was how nasty his splitter was.
«Yesavage got 11 misses on 14 splitter swings in his debut, which was merely the third-highest whiff rate in any game this year against a splitter with at least 10 swings, and remember: it was his first game,» -Pretillo
To what capacity the Blue Jays will use him in is interesting but there is a good chance he has a big role due to their recent rotation issues.
Yesavage will get at least one more starts before postseason baseball gets underway, so it will be interesting to see how convincing his performances will be and if he gets a big start in the playoffs.
