New York Yankees broadcaster Michael Kay lit up Toronto Blue Jays offseason talk, and Jays fans were not having it.
On social media, the Yankees announcer challenged Toronto to explain how the club improved, insisting the Blue Jays «only got worse» after losing Bo Bichette to the New York Mets and having Kyle Tucker sign in Los Angeles.
That's classic Kay, loud, blunt, and built for replies. It also hits a nerve because Blue Jays fans have heard this movie before, where outside voices treat Toronto like it has to re-earn credibility every winter.
Again, tell me how the Blue Jays got better. No one is answering that. And of course they're flawed. Every team has flaws. Not hard to admit. Last near flawless team I saw was 1998 Yanks.
But the funny thing is that his question is answerable without getting defensive. The Jays did lose a major piece when Bo Bichette left for the Mets, and that's not something you hand-wave away.
Michael Kay, Toronto Blue Jays offseason, real answers
I'll admit it, as a fan, that quote landed like someone kicking snow off their boots in your hallway.
Start with the biggest swing: Toronto officially committed seven years and $210 million to Dylan Cease on December 2, and you don't do that if you think you're getting worse.
Cease wasn't perfect in 2025, but he still threw 168 innings with a 4.55 ERA and 215 strikeouts in 32 starts, which is exactly the kind of durability Toronto's chased for years.
Then there's the bullpen add that gets overlooked in screaming matches. Tyler Rogers brought a 1.98 ERA across 81 games with a 0.94 WHIP last season, and the Jays gave him three years and $37 million to stabilize late innings.
On January 4, they also added Kazuma Okamoto on a four-year, $60 million deal, which is a pretty direct attempt to replace some of the offense they just lost.
Despite all of these moves that the fans pointed out, Kay stood his ground stating that they still loss Chris Bassitt, Max Scherzer and Bo Bichette.
And lost Chris Bassitt and Max Scherzer and Bo Bichette. Your move.
Ironically, all three players that Kay pointed out that the Blue Jays lost this off-season were not in the lineup for their ALDS series against the New York Yankees this past post season.
