Addison Barger is the injured Blue Jay John Schneider can see coming back first, and that matters for a club already dragging 10 players through the injured list.
That is the clearest takeaway from Toronto's latest injury picture. Barger is out of the walking boot after his left ankle sprain, and Schneider is hoping the outfielder misses close to the minimum stay.
Barger first became eligible to return Friday against Arizona. That puts him at the front of a group that still includes George Springer, José Berrios, Alejandro Kirk, Yimi Garcia, Shane Bieber, Trey Yesavage, and Anthony Santander.
For Toronto, that is the short-term help they need most. Nathan Lukes, Jesús Sánchez, Myles Straw, and Davis Schneider have been rotating through the corner outfield mix while Barger has been out.
Trey Yesavage is not far behind. The right-hander is expected to make at least 1 more rehab start this week, and if that goes cleanly, he could be back in the majors next week.
That gives Schneider a real near-term rotation option, especially with Patrick Corbin brought in to help cover innings while Yesavage and Berrios work back.
George Springer sits in a tougher lane. The broken left big toe is fresh, and the Blue Jays expect the next 24 to 48 hours to tell them more about how fast he can move.
Why Addison Barger tops this Blue Jays list
Springer may feel better in about a week to 10 days, but a toe fracture is not the kind of injury a player can simply ignore. Running, planting, and swinging all get tied to the same problem.
That leaves Barger as the cleaner return story. He is already past the boot stage, and his timeline sounds more like a baseball ramp-up than a wait-and-see medical hold.
Berrios is moving, too, but he is still at least a couple of weeks away. He recently threw live batting practice and is lined up to begin a rehab assignment next week with 50 pitches targeted in his first outing.
Kirk remains a longer play. His broken left thumb carried an estimated 6-week absence, which puts mid-May in sight if everything stays on track.
Garcia and Bieber are even less immediate because neither has started a rehab assignment yet. Santander is further back still, with a late-season return the best-case picture after left shoulder surgery.
So the Blue Jays are not really waiting for one saviour here. They are waiting for Barger first, Yesavage soon after, and hoping Springer's toe does not turn a short absence into something heavier.
That is why Barger matters right now. On a roster full of injuries, he looks like the first real piece Toronto can get back in the dugout.
