The Toronto Blue Jays have a decently big issue with pitcher Jose Berrios as they do not really have a spot for him and will likely be forced to trade him.

Berrios was recently ranked as one of the worst contracts in the MLB heading into the 2026 season as he has an average salary of $22.33 million next season.

Blue Jays might have to trade Jose Berrios

The Blue Jays want to make some big moves with their starting rotation this off-season and getting rid of Berrios should be a priority since he is set to make a lot of money and they do not have an actual spot of their roster for him.
In a recent report, it was suggested that the Blue Jays should look to trade Berrios but that will not be that easy since he is still owed $67 million on his contract over the next 3 years.
"Berrios is still owed another $67 million over the next three years, so moving him won't be easy. However, he is still a fine backend option if the relationship can be mended, and the Blue Jays and Pirates look like a good fit on a Mitch Keller trade to give the staff more of a No. 2/3 type to take some pressure off Bieber and Yesavage." -Reuter

In 2023 and 2024, Berrios was very solid for the Blue Jays but had quite the down year this past season while also dealing with some injury problems and ultimately lost his spot in the starting rotation.
This past season, Berrios finished with a 4.17 ERA and 9-5 record in 166 innings pitched as well as striking out a total of 138 batters.
The Blue Jays will certainly look at all of their options when it comes to Berrios but if they were to keep him and have him pitch out of the bullpen as he did at the end of the season, it will be a lot of money down the drain.
If Toronto does end up trading him, due to this past season, they will likely not get much in return and might have to retain a portion of his salary.
