Former Blue Jays catcher Brian Serven left Wednesday's game after fouling a pitch into his own face.

The Athletics catcher was squaring to bunt a 94 mph changeup from righty Jose Fermin in the sixth inning when the pitch ran in and deflected straight off his bat into his face.

He dropped to the ground immediately, touching the left side of his face as manager Mark Kotsay and a trainer rushed to attend to him.

Serven stayed down for a lengthy stretch before eventually getting back to his feet. Jonah Heim replaced him mid-at-bat and flied out to center as the Athletics led 5-3 en route to a 7-3 win over the Angels.

One broadcaster's reaction summed up the moment. "Oh, no. Goodness."

Serven underwent a CT scan afterward, with Kotsay saying his availability for the season's final four games is genuinely uncertain.

Why the video replay offers some real reassurance

"We're not sure," Kotsay said, per USA Today. "Right now, he's getting a CT scan and they're taking a look at the swelling area on the face. Scary moment for sure."

There is a somewhat encouraging detail buried in the replay, though.

"Fortunately, looking at the video replay, the ball hit the bat, it also bounced off the earpiece," Kotsay said. "So we're hoping that with the combination of that, in that direct impact area underneath the eye, there was a good amount of swelling."

That partial deflection off the earpiece likely reduced the force of the impact compared to a completely direct hit.

Kotsay said the team expects to know more Thursday morning, right as Oakland opens a season-ending four-game home set against the Astros.

For a player who spent time in Toronto's organization before landing with the Athletics, this is a genuinely frightening moment to close out the season on, regardless of which uniform he's wearing now.

Whether Serven plays any part in these final four games depends entirely on what Thursday's evaluation reveals.
