Former Cy Young winner and Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Max Scherzer was a key piece in their run to the World Series last season, but now as a free agent with some unfinished business, which team will take a chance on the 42 year old pitcher?
If Scherzer can remain healthy and keep his velocity, he can still be very useful for a franchise with limited starts.
Who will sign Max Scherzer?
Matthew Sookram of Jays Journal reported on the future for Scherzer, while at some moments last season Scherzer showed his age, but other times like in the World Series he resembled more his former Cy Young self. If teams are strategic with him, they can extract a lot of good pitching from the veteran.
"He didn't have a great regular season, giving up 19 home runs and 49 earned runs in 85 innings with a 1.294 WHIP and ERA+ of 82. However, he had a great run in the postseason and if he comes in to Spring Training fully healthy, there's bound to be a team who will take a flyer on the future hall of fame pitcher."-Matthew Sookram
Sookram predicts the San Francisco Giants will be the team to sign him. The biggest reason is their new manager Tony Vitello, who is a close friend to Scherzer, and the Giants need some more veteran presence.
"Prediction: San Francisco Giants. Their new manager Tony Vitello is Scherzer's long-time friend, stemming from Vitello's time as Scherzer's pitching coach at the University of Missouri. That, and the fact that the Giants could use another veteran on their staff make the stars align for Scherzer to head out west."-Sookram
Scherzer has openly said he wants one more World Series championship before he retires, while the Giants don't seem anywhere near a championship, the Blue Jays didn't either only a year ago.
