Former Toronto Blue Jays top prospect is finally get a chance in the MLB
The Athletics are giving a former top Toronto Blue Jays prospect his first opportunity in the major leagues.
The A's are calling up a former Blue Jays top prospect.
According to ESPN's Jeff Passan, right-handed pitcher
Gunnar Hoglund is being promoted by the Athletics. Ranked as the team's No. 14 prospect by MLB Pipeline, this marks his first call-up to the majors.
Sportsnet reports that Hoglund, 25, was selected by the Blue Jays in the first round of the 2021 draft while recovering from Tommy John surgery. He never appeared in a game for the organization before being traded.
Dave Sessions from MLB.com writes that elbow surgery kept Hoglund out for much of 2022 and limited his time on the mound in 2023. He bounced back with a strong showing last season at Double-A Midland, appearing in 19 games (18 starts), recording a 2.84 ERA and 97 strikeouts over 104 2/3 innings.
In March of 2022, the Blue Jays dealt Hoglund to the A's as part of the Matt Chapman trade.
"Hoglund began moving through the A's minor league system in 2022 and reached triple-A in 2024. This season, in six starts for Las Vegas, Hoglund has a 1-2 record with a 2.73 ERA and 30 strikeouts." -Sportsnet
Sessions also writes that Hoglund has been impressive in six starts for Triple-A Las Vegas this season, with a 2.43 ERA and 30 strikeouts in 29 2/3 innings. In his latest Triple-A start on April 27, Hoglund tossed five scoreless innings, giving up just three hits and two walks while striking out five.
Hoglund is expected to make his MLB debut Friday against the Miami Marlins.
