Fluharty's name has come up in recent reports that he might be moved this off-season by the Blue Jays due to his consistency issues this season but he certainly made a case for himself with last night's performance.
Blue Jays pitcher speaks on how he felt after his first career save
Mason Fluharty of the @BlueJays recorded his first MLB save by retiring two batters, Shohei Ohtani and Mookie Betts, with the bases loaded. The last MLB save which saw two former MVPs retired with the bases loaded was by Trevor Hoffman on 9/15/02 (Barry Bonds and Jeff Kent).
After his first career save, Fluharty spoke to the media stating that he really didn't think about the situation, just went out there and did while also adding that he blacked out in the moment and just trusted his pitches.
Mason Fluharty on his thought process in Sunday's 9th: "No thinking, no thinking. Just go out there and do it.
I was super excited, super pumped. I honestly blacked out. I have no idea what happened out there. I just trusted my pitches, attacked guys. That's all you can do."
While Fluharty's stats this season are still no great as he currently has a 5.45 ERA in 43.2 innings pitched with 45 strikeouts, this first career save was certainly a step in the right direction.
The real concern after this game has been Hoffman who could not seem able to locate or control his pitches last night but thankfully the Blue Jays still got the win.
