The Toronto Maple Leafs have had an October full of struggles, but they are getting much less heat than usual, thanks in full part to the Toronto Blue Jays, who came one win away from winning the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Maples Leafs struggles shadowed by Blue Jays success
David Alter of Yahoo Sports wrote about how the Blue Jays are protecting the Maple Leafs from an angry mob in Toronto. The Leafs have gone a disappointing 4-4-1 in October, and it's well below the expectations the team had to start the NHL season.
"he record on its own isn't anything to get concerned about; it is the manner of their play that is worrying. This poor play is characterized by Toronto allowing the most zone rushes so far this season, forward lines that have undergone constant shuffling, and a struggle by their best players to consistently carry the games."-Alter
While The Leafs struggle, the main focus has been the Blue Jays who have been the talk of the town despite a heartbreaking loss in extra innings last night.
Even Leafs head coach Craig Berube offered his thoughts on the matter.
"Well, it's deserving. The Jays are in the World Series. There's only one team in Canada. Canada's focused on that right now, in my opinion, especially Toronto, which is the right thing."-Berube
Unfortunately for the Maple Leafs, now that the World Series has concluded, all the attention will shift back to them and hopefully they figure it out by then.
"There are some that argue that if the Jays win the World Series, the attention would immediately shift back to the Maple Leafs within a matter of days. I disagree with that. If the Jays are able to win their first championship since 1993, everything from the parade to the after parties would effectively dominate the news cycle for at least another couple of weeks, if not a month. Nobody may even get concerned about the Leafs until after the American Thanksgiving weekend at the end of November."-Alter
Due to the Blue Jays massive success this season, despite the heartbreaker last night, Toronto might start becoming more of a Blue Jays city as the Leafs have failed to have any real success in decades.
