The Toronto Blue Jays are looking at a few options for their starting rotation and bullpen for next season with veteran Chris Bassitt possibly being part of it.

Bassitt at the end of the season told reporters clearly that he would love to return to Toronto next season but is clearly aware he can't if he is not offered a contract.

Chris Bassitt might be looking to return to Toronto

Throughout the last few years, Bassitt has been one of the Blue Jays most consistent pitchers and across the MLB as he has only had one year with an ERA above 4.00 in his last 8 seasons which came in 2024.
Bassitt was also a huge part of the Blue Jays bullpen in the playoffs as he finishing with a 1.04 ERA in 8.2 innings pitched and finished with 8 strikeouts which proves he could be looked at for the 2026 bullpen.
On top of that, he proved that his value could go beyond than being just a starter this past postseason with the Blue Jays. Pitching out of the bullpen as a reliever for Toronto during the MLB Playoffs, Bassitt compiled a 1.04 ERA, 0.58 WHIP along with 10 strikeouts in 8.2 innings pitched over seven postseason appearances. -Eng

Out of the two pitchers starting pitcher leaving Toronto this off-season in Bassitt and Scherzer, it makes a lot more sense for Toronto to bring back Bassitt since he offers a lot more and is a much safer bet.
As a result, as much as the Blue Jays and their beloved fanbase would want both players to be back once for the 2026 MLB season, Toronto realistically should reunite with Bassitt over Scherzer this offseason. That is because not only does Bassitt have the lesser injury history of the two -Eng

If the Blue Jays can find a way to convince Bassitt to a take on a role as a reliever and get him on an affordable contract, he might be exactly what they need to improve their bullpen for 2026.
The main issue here is that other teams might offer him a starting role which will be very hard for the Blue Jays to compete with if they plan on using him as a reliever next season.
