The Philadelphia Phillies announced that they have agreed to terms with former Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Genesis Cabrera.

MLB Trade Rumors says the Phillies and Cabrera agreed to a minor league deal, and the signing finally showed up on the MiLB transaction log this week. It's the classic January depth move, quiet now, useful later.

Philadelphia's need is pretty straightforward after moving Matt Strahm, and a lefty with big league reps helps patch the ladder. MLBTR even frames Cabrera as no higher than third among lefties, behind José Alvarado and Tanner Banks.
For Jays fans, Cabrera is not some random name. Toronto acquired him from the St. Louis Cardinals for catcher Sammy Hernandez in July 2023, and he immediately gave them clean innings.
MLB's player page shows how sharp that Blue Jays stretch was, a 2.66 ERA in 29 games with Toronto across 23.2 innings, plus a .195 opponents' average. That version looked like a real matchup weapon.
Last season was the opposite kind of résumé builder, a 6.54 ERA over 40 appearances and 42.2 innings, while bouncing around four teams. His career line sits at 312 games, a 4.24 ERA, and 303 strikeouts in 318.1 innings.

The raw stuff still looks playable on paper. MLBTR notes Cabrera sits 95 to 96 mph with both his sinker and four-seamer now, and his cutter and curveball have both flashed as real pitches in the past.
The path back is simple but not easy, keep the ball in the yard and stop the free traffic. Toronto's 2023 usage showed he can neutralize lefties when his command is on, and that's the pitch-to-plan the Phillies are buying.
He turns 30 in October, so this is still a good age to squeeze value out of a minor league deal. The next milestone is spring, and whether Cabrera's velocity and strike throwing look closer to his Jays stint than his 2025 stat line.
