The Blue Jays are likely to miss out on free agent Pete Alonso even after Max Scherzer signing
Mets owner Steve Cohen recently stated that the team is looking at other options after the Alonso negotiations were not going well but with his increasing interest to return to New York, they will likely make him a new deal.
MLB insider Keegan Matheson sated that the Blue Jays are still very interested in Alonso but a deal is now more unlikely since Alonso seems to be waiting on an offer from the Mets to come in.
"Pete Alonso's market -- and some of the reporting around it -- has been ... unique," Matheson wrote. "Yes, the Blue Jays like Alonso, but this continues to feel like a situation where Alonso is waiting for the Mets.
Like they've done many times in past pursuits, the Blue Jays can position themselves well as the next-best option here, which may be enough in the end, but my eyes are still on the Mets." -Matheson
Adding Alonso to the Blue Jays lineup would be huge for Toronto's offense and they have the money to get him but it comes down to if he is willing to leave the Mets offer on the table for the Blue Jays.
Adding Alonso to this lineup on a three- or four-year deal would be quite an upgrade for the Blue Jays. If any team has the money to steal the slugger from the Mets, it's the Blue Jays. -Pressnell
Many thought that signing Max Scherzer would help land Alonso as the two used to play together and it shows that the Blue Jays are serious about winning but it does not seem to be helping for the moment.
