Dylan Cease gave John Schneider a better Blue Jays injury update Thursday, with a hamstring bullpen now back in play this weekend in Baltimore.
That matters because this is the first real forward step since Toronto placed Cease on the 15-day injured list with a left hamstring strain on May 25.
The latest word is that Cease has been playing catch the last couple of days and is feeling better. That alone changes the tone from holding pattern to actual progression.
The next checkpoint is the one the Blue Jays needed to hear. Toronto is hopeful Cease can throw a bullpen in Baltimore this weekend, which would finally move him beyond flat-ground work.
That does not mean the club is ready to lock in a return date. A bullpen is still only a checkpoint, not a rehab assignment or a rotation spot back on the schedule. That is an inference based on the reported plan.
Still, it is a much better place than where Toronto was 4 days ago. When Cease hit the IL, the Blue Jays were left trying to cover innings again on a staff that has already been stretched by injuries.
Cease matters too much for this to be brushed aside. MLB.com's injury report still lists him as one of the club's major absences, and any clean ramp-up gives John Schneider a little more breathing room.
Why Shane Bieber's update matters too
The second part of Thursday's news was just as useful for Toronto. Shane Bieber remains on track to continue his rehab assignment with the Dunedin Blue Jays on Sunday.
Bieber already opened that rehab path earlier this week in the Florida Complex League, where he threw 2.0 scoreless innings, allowed 3 hits, walked 0, and struck out 3.
That first outing gave the Blue Jays exactly what they wanted: clean work, no damage on the scoreboard, and a simple next step instead of a setback. His next build is expected to push toward 3 innings.
So while Cease is trying to get back to a bullpen, Bieber is already a little farther down the road. Toronto suddenly has 2 injured starters moving in the right direction at the same time.
That does not erase the pressure on the Blue Jays' staff today. It does mean the club can finally talk about progress instead of only patchwork. That is an inference supported by the current injury situation and both rehab updates.
And that is why this update landed well. Dylan Cease is feeling better, Shane Bieber is staying on schedule, and John Schneider finally has 2 pitching stories that are moving forward instead of backward.
Will Dylan Cease return before Shane Bieber finishes his rehab build?
