Wednesday night's game started out looking like another strong outing for Trey Yesavage, but the Toronto Blue Jays' top pitching prospect ran into trouble in the third inning.
It marked
Yesavage's second start for the Double-A New Hampshire Fisher Cats following his promotion earlier last week.
Blue Jays' top prospect's latest start raises eyebrows.
Sportsnet reported that Yesavage got off to a strong start against the Somerset Patriots, a New York Yankees affiliate, retiring seven of the first eight batters he faced.
"Through two innings, Toronto's 2024 first-rounder allowed just one baserunner via a walk and struck out two, but after striking out the leadoff hitter in the third frame, the Patriots flipped the script on Yesavage." -Sportsnet
The trouble started with a double from Max Burt and an RBI single by Roc Riggio. Next, George Lombard Jr. drew a six-pitch walk, followed by a strikeout, another walk, and then a bases-clearing double off the wall by the first baseman Dylan Jasso, driving in four runs during the inning.
"That marked the end of Yesavage's night, having thrown 2.2 innings and 54 pitches. He was replaced by reliever Nate Garkow, who induced a flyout to bring the third to an end. Yesavage's final line read: three hits, four earned runs, three walks and four strikeouts. It's the first time in the 21-year-old's professional career that the righty's allowed more than three runs in an outing and just the first time since May 13 that he surrendered three or more hits." -Sportsnet
By recording four strikeouts, Yesavage tied Canadian right-hander Jonah Tong for the minor-league lead, each now with 96 strikeouts on this season.
