The Toronto Blue Jays are running the risk of losing Leo Jimenez, after acquiring Chase Lee their 40-man roster is now full, leaving no room for Jimenez, a similar situation occurred with Otto Lopez who had a breakout season when he ended up on the Miami Marlins.
The Blue Jays losing anyone in the Rule 5 draft but their latest signing might still cause the same outcome.
There will likely be no room left for Leo Jimenez with the Toronto Blue Jays.
Ryley Delaney of Blue Jays Nation reported Blue Jays Nation the growing concern of losing Jimenez this offseason. Jimenez has had a roller coaster start to his career, but that is mostly due to injury, when he's healthy he's been producing.
"At that point, the highest level Jiménez played at was Single-A, and he had one career home run. His power totals jumped to six the following season, but Jiménez missed a chunk of the 2022 season injured. Jiménez's home run total increased to eight in 2023, as he had a relatively healthy season playing in Double-A, and then Triple-A at the end of the season. The 2024 season saw Jiménez get off to a great start in Triple-A, slashing .271/.416/.431 with seven home runs in 226 plate appearances."-Delaney
2025 however, was another season riddled with injuries for Jimenez. Only having 99 plate appearances in the minors and 32 with the Blue Jays. He recorded one home run against the Oakland Athletics. For Jimenez to play in triple-A this season he will have to be DFA'd meaning he could get picked up by another team. It'll be a difficult decision for the Blue Jays head office to make.
"The other option is to trade him. Not only would the Jays get something back, but it'd also give the 24-year-old an opportunity to make a big league roster, something he probably won't get with the Blue Jays. They have a ton of infield depth and a few guys ahead of him on the chart."-Delaney
The Blue Jays have ample depth on their roster as it stands, it would still be not ideal for them to lose Jimenez for nothing, and then having perform well with another organization. It seems that the best possible option is to trade him, and at least get a return if he is just going to leave anyway. But most teams won't offer a fair return as they can just wait for the DFA to acquire him.
