The Toronto Blue Jays are looking at most positions this off-season to improve their team and it looks like their former catcher Danny Jansen might be of interest.
Late last night, Ross Atkins spoke to the media about Tyler Heineman's future with the team as he stated that they are still looking at all of their options.
Danny Jansen might be on his way back to Toronto
Jansen was recently let go by the Milwaukee Brewers as they declined his option which released him back into free agency as he looks for a new team and contract which could interest the Blue Jays.
While last time Jansen was in Toronto, him and Alejandro Kirk were still battling for the first catcher job, he would clearly be coming in as the backup in this situation and could be a great option and most would say better than Heineman.
Ultimately, Jansen's fit depends on how one views backup catcher Tyler Heineman. Unlike Jansen's first tenure with the Blue Jays, Alejandro Kirk is the undisputed starting catcher, as he excels on both offence and defence. -Delaney
The main aspect that Jansen brings to the table that Heineman does not would be his offense even though he is not an incredible hitter, he would bring more to the table.
One box that Jansen fits better than Heineman is power. Jansen has never hit the 400 plate appearance mark in his career (injuries have played a big part in that), but he's hit his fair share of home runs in his career. -Delaney
According to contract projections, Jansen is expected to sign a one year deal worth between $7-$10 million per season which would be a solid amount for backup catcher but would also give the Blue Jays some much needed depth at the position.
According to Spotrac, Jansen's market value sits at $7.2 million annually, with comparables to Kyle Higashioka, Victor Caratini, Travis d'Arnaud, and Christian Vázquez. He's one of the better catchers available, so it wouldn't be surprising if he earns a one-year deal around $7.5 million - $10 million. -Delaney
This could end up being a very interesting reunion for the Blue Jays as it would help them with catcher depth and fans would also love to have him back as they were sad to see him go at the trade deadline in 2024.
