From MLB insiders to casual fans, it feels like everyone is eagerly waiting for the Toronto Blue Jays to fall apart so they can announce the team is ready to make moves at the trade deadline.

If the Blue Jays remain below .500 by late July, they should consider trading players with expiring contracts, such as Bo Bichette and Chris Bassitt.

Why the Blue Jays are aren't ready for a fire sale at this point in their season.

Alvin Garcia from Heavy writes that Tim Britton of The Athletic is already suggesting the Jays should start selling if their season doesn't pick up. But the big question remains: should they double down or cash out?
"Let's be real. Bo Bichette isn't untouchable. He's a free agent at year's end, and if Toronto isn't going to extend him, they should absolutely trade him, like Bleacher Report's Kerry Miller wrote, for more than a comp pick. He's slashing .270/.319/.391 and has shown signs of life after a miserable 2024." -Garcia

Bassitt is a reliable mid-rotation pitcher with a 3.38 ERA over 11 starts. Several teams would be interested in him. The Jays have won more than half of the games he's started. At 36 and on an expiring contract, if the Blue Jays aren't contending, trading him makes perfect sense.
Garcia also mentions that Max Scherzer and Chad Green would be hot trade targets for other teams.
"Scherzer's health is a wild card. If he returns and shows anything close to vintage form, contenders will be calling-even if it's just for his October experience. The return won't be huge, but it beats nothing. Green, on the other hand, is a classic deadline rental. The 34-year-old reliever has been solid, with a 3.47 ERA in 24 outings. His homer problem is real, but his strikeout-walk ratios remain appealing to front offices. If last year taught us anything, it's that relievers always get overpaid at the deadline." -Garcia

The Blue jays have plenty of talent to make a playoff push. If they come up short, then yes, it's time to sell, be creative and maximize returns. But the notion that they should start unleading assets just because some writers have already decided their fate? That's just lazy thinking.
Until this team is truly out of contention, don't expect a fire sale just yet. And even if one happens, it'll be on Toronto's terms, not based on what the media wants.
