The Toronto Blue Jays trade Matt Svanson to the St Louis Cardinals back in 2023 and the move is still hurting them to this day.
The Blue Jays have made it a focus this off-season to add to their bullpen since it was their weakest link last season, especially it the World Series when they took on the stacked Los Angeles Dodgers bullpen.
Since then, the Blue Jays have made some additions such as signing veteran reliever Tyler Rogers to a 3 year deal and are still looking but this would not be a problem if they still had Svanson.
Blue Jays Matt Svanson trade continues to hurt them
Ross Atkins and Mark Shapiro have made some incredible moves over the last decade and some especially great ones over the last two years but there have also be couple rougher ones, the last being this Svanson trade.
At the 2023 trade deadline, the Blue Jays traded Svanson to the Cardinals in exchange for Paul DeJong which at the time seemed like a great move but it no longer is.
"Their big trade before the trade deadline saw them move Adam Kloffenstein and Sem Robberse for Jordan Hicks, while also trading Matt Svanson for Paul DeJong. It was the last one that hasn't aged well." -Ryley Delaney
DeJong only ended up lasting 13 games with the Blue Jays in which he hit 0 home runs and 1 RBI before being released and signing with the San Francisco Giants.
Since then, Svanson made his MLB debut this past season for the Cardinals an incredible year as he finished with a 1.94 ERA in 60.1 innings pitched and 68 strikeouts.
This was clearly a bad move as the Blue Jays took Svanson as a steal in the 13th round and he has turned into an excellent reliever which they could certainly use right now.
