This offseason two former Toronto Blue Jays pitchers will test their value in free agency, as both Trevor Richards and Carl Edwards Jr. are in search of some new homes this offseason.
Trevor Richards and Carl Edwards Jr. set to test the open market this offseason.
Ryley Delaney of Blue Jays Nation recently reported on the two pitchers opting to hit free agency this winter. Both have different paths but with similarities especially when it comes their time with the Blue Jays.
"Richards had a weird tenure with the Blue Jays. They acquired him and Bowden Francis from the Milwaukee Brewers for Rowdy Tellez in 2021. Richards (and Adam Cimber) stabilized the Jays' bullpen, helping them push for a postseason spot, falling just short on the final day of the regular season. Richards finished the 2021 season with a 3.31 ERA and 4.61 FIP in 32.2 innings pitched with the Blue Jays."-Delaney
Following his time with the Blue Jays he was traded to the Minnesota Twins, and rather than resign with them he signed with Chicago Cubs where he never received an opportunity. He then pitched for the Kansas City Royals and Arizona Diamondbacks but for less than 10 innings combined.
While both had short tenures with the Blue Jays, Edwards Jr. was extremely brief,
pitching only 5 and one third innings with four runs earned allowed. Following his time in Toronto he pitched for the Washington Nationals, San Diego Padres, Los Angeles Angels, and the Texas Rangers.
"Other players to elect free agency are Eric Haase, Chad Wallach, Akil Baddoo, Dominic Fletcher, Corey Julks, Keegan Thompson, and Randy Wynne.-Delaney
It will be interesting to see if the Blue Jays explore any of these options, as they desperately need some help in the bullpen next season.
