Former Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Max Scherzer is still looking for a new deal but it looks like he should be able to find one despite being 41 years old.

There was a time this off-season when the Blue Jays were still linked to Scherzer and having him return but after signing Cody Ponce and Dylan Cease, it looks like that won't be happening.

Max Scherzer should be able to avoid retirement and find a contract

While a lot of the top free agent starting pitchers have found themselves new contract, Scherzer is still searching for his.
According to MLB reporter Will Leach, Scherzer should still be able to find himself a deal due to how well he pitched in the playoffs and World Series for the Blue Jays.
"If you just look at Scherzer's regular-season stats for 2025, you might think he -- at the age of 41 -- might not have that much left to give. But in October, he reminded everyone he is Max Scherzer, and in a way that could surely encourage someone else to bring him back for 2026 for similar reasons." -Leach

There is certainly some risk is signing Scherzer as the Blue Jays saw this season as he only played in 17 games during the regular season due to back and thumb issues which is normal for a 41 year old pitcher.
However, the risk could be worth it for certain teams just ask the Blue Jays who risked and were rewarded in the playoffs when they needed him most as he believed multiple incredible performances.
Scherzer was great in the playoffs but was not the same during the season as he finished with 5.19 ERA which is the worst year in his entire career to go along with a 5-5 record and 82 strikeouts.
One team that has been rumored to be very interested in Scherzer is the San Francisco Giants but as of right now they have yet to make him an offer.
The chances that Scherzer ends up being forced into retirement because he cannot find a new deal seem to be quite slim at this point but there is still a chance if no team is willing to take the risk.
