Former three-time Cy Young award winner Max Scherzer was quite successful for the Toronto Blue Jays this season, so good in fact that the Blue Jays are looking at another veteran pitcher, Justin Verlander.
Scherzer's success allows for Verlander opportunity with Blue Jays.
Jake Ferraro of Jays Journal spoke about the potential for Justin Verlander to move across the border and sign with the Blue Jays this offseason.
"Just like Scherzer, former Cy Young winner Justin Verlander also signed with a new team for the 2025 season. Verlander signed a one-year contract with the San Francisco Giants who had hoped that Verlander would turn into a solid starter at 42 years old. Although he had a tough few months to start the season, Verlander's recent pitching is getting him back to his old self."-Ferraro
Verlander has had his worst season in his career this year as the veteran turned 42 years older, but as previously mentioned is starting to find a bit of a groove when it matters most.
"In 25 starts this season, Verlander has a 3-10 record, but he's been solid lately with the Giants still pursuing a late postseason push in the struggling National League. Over his last three starts, Verlander has won two of them. Verlander was dominant in his last start on Saturday night when he pitched six shutout innings against the St. Louis Cardinals on the road."-Ferraro
If Scherzer decides to not return to Toronto next year, Verlander could become an option to help keep the consistent rotation they have had this year.
While Scherzer has been solid for the Blue Jays this season, signing a pitcher over 40 years old does come with it's set of problems as the Blue Jays found out this season.
