Joe Mantiply gave John Schneider a harder bullpen problem Wednesday when Toronto moved the lefty to the 60-day injured list.

Toronto made the transfer to clear a 40-man roster spot for Simeon Woods Richardson, the right-hander Toronto just reacquired from Minnesota.

The move also confirmed where this injury is headed. Mantiply was placed on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to 5/18/26, with what first looked like left knee inflammation.

Now the Blue Jays say he is undergoing arthroscopic surgery on that knee after getting a second opinion. There is still no operation date or recovery timeline in place.

That stings because Mantiply had turned into one of Toronto's quiet bullpen wins. In 17 appearances, he pitched to a 2.04 ERA and gave the club steady left-handed coverage.

He also punched out 16 in 17.2 innings, which is strong work for a reliever who was not supposed to become a trusted midgame option this quickly.

Even more telling, Mantiply allowed just 1 earned run across his last 15 outings before the knee shut him down. This was not dead roster weight. This was usable relief.

Toronto loses more than a roster spot

That is why this is bigger than a paperwork move. The longer injured list opens room on the 40-man, but it also pulls a reliable arm out of Schneider's bridge.

Toronto used that opening to add Woods Richardson after the trade was logged on 6/3/26, so the club clearly viewed the spot as worth immediate pitching depth.

The Blue Jays did get one small lift the same day when Yimi Garcia was sent on a rehab assignment, but that is not the same as having Mantiply ready tonight.

Mantiply, 35, had re-signed with Toronto on 3/3/26 and saw his contract selected on 4/5/26. He went from depth signing to real bullpen piece in barely 1 month.

Over 273 career games, Mantiply owns a 4.35 ERA, and that big-league mileage is part of why this hurts. Toronto was leaning on a veteran, not just testing a flier.

For a staff still shuffling arms and chasing clean innings, this knee surgery leaves a real hole. Joe Mantiply is off the 40-man, off the mound, and off Toronto's short-term bullpen plans.
