The Toronto Blue Jays are trying to figure out a system for their six man rotation and a recent proposal was suggested that would see Max Scherzer moved to the bullpen.
Hosmer stated that the Blue Jays should look to move Scherzer to the bullpen to be their closer since Jeff Hoffman has been battling a lot of consistency issues this season.
"The relievers were performing so poorly earlier this month that player-turned-analyst Eric Hosmer recently suggested that the team should move future Hall of Fame starter Max Scherzer into the closer role for the playoffs. Even if the bullpen struggles return, though, the team won't be entertaining a move for starter Max Scherzer to solve them, according to a new report. -Chawaga
MLB insider Steven Phillips disagreed with Hosmer stating that Jose Berrios should be the one moved to the bullpen to be the team's closer.
"The prolonged struggles have led to some wild proposals," Gregor Chisholm noted for the Toronto Star. "Former big-leaguer Eric Hosmer recently suggested the Jays should make Scherzer the closer while TSN Insider Steve Phillips felt it should be José Berrios. Neither move will happen. Scherzer projects to be a playoff starter while Berrios hasn't pitched out of the bullpen since 2017." -Chisholm
Scherzer has been one of the Blue Jays most consistent pitchers this season and has been putting up great numbers lately as his ERA currently sits at 3.82 with a 5-2 record which is why moving him to the bullpen does not make sense.
Moving Berrios could be an entertaining option since he has pitched out of the bullpen before in his career and since he is struggling right now and they have 6 starting pitchers, it could be an option.
