Chris Bassitt speaks honestly about the bullpen struggles
Chris Bassitt was on the mound for Toronto yesterday in which he had a solid performance pitching 5.2 innings, giving up only 4 hits and 2 earned runs while striking out 6 batters.
«I don't think much of it,» Bassitt said. «His numbers obviously aren't where they need to be, but I think (he's) the same guy that pretty much carried us for two straight months. And then, yes, had a couple bad ones. But overall, I trust him more than anyone. You're allowed to have bad ones. Especially when we rely on you as much as we do. So yeah, I trust him to close every game.» -Bassitt
While Bassitt's goal was to instill confidence in Hoffman after the blown save, mentioning that he has more confidence in him than anyone else in the bullpen is definitely a rough comment to hear for the other relief pitchers.
Hoffman has had some very big high this season follow by some extremely low moments which is what he is experiencing right now as he has a 6.75 ERA in his last 7 games with 5 hits and 5 earned runs in 6.2 innings pitched.
The Blue Jays are one of the best teams in the MLB this year but their biggest weakness by far has been the bullpen as very few pitchers have been able to stay consistent.
Hopefully Hoffman can figure things out before the playoffs because if not the Blue Jays will seriously have to look at other possible options to be their closer.
