The New York Mets announced yesterday that they have signed former Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Richard Lovelady to a major league deal.

The Minnesota Twins announced last week that they decided to release Lovelady after he was DFA'd and cleared waivers which is how he landed back in free agency.

Former Blue Jays pitcher signs with the Mets and wants to called by new name

The Mets announced yesterday that they signed Lovelady to a major league contract which came as a bit of a shock since he was on a minor league deal with the Twins after being released by the Blue Jays.

Today, the Mets signed reliever Richard Lovelady to a one-year deal.

He has requested to go by his nickname, Dicky
For some reason, after signing with the Mets, Lovelady asked that he be called by his nickname "Dicky" instead of Richard from now on at the ballpark but the why is still unknown.
Lovelady now wants to go by his nickname, "Dicky," a hilarious new name change that was in the official announcement made by the Mets. -Wakai

Lovelady had a tough time this season in Toronto as he only pitched 1.2 innings, finishing with a 21.60 ERA before being DFA'd and released.
During his time with the Twins, he never got a shot at the majors, spent 20.2 innings in Triple-A putting up a extremely solid 1.31 ERA before being released.
The Mets are likely hoping that he will be able to tap into the way he was pitching in the minors but time will tell if that will end up happening.
